The Calling of Kuri

7Feb/107

Oh hallo!

Heya guys and gals, been a bit since I've made a post so thought I'd break the silence. I'm in the process of creating yet another character, (another one Kuri? How many do you want?). Soooo, I created an undead rogue on Moonglade. Oooo shiny. He is now currently level 36 and I created him a couple of days ago so he's coming along nicely.

What's happening then..? Ahh yeah, it's Love is in the Air time in WoW again. Not really a fan of that "event", in and out of game. Had a little chuckle though as I was putting something into my bank at Undercity. I couldn't help but notice what I see as a reference to Portal - A Companion Cube!

Yeah.. :)  Well, I think it is ;)  So I suppose this valentines event isn't all bad, just for that :P

Star Trek Online is looking to be released soonish, if not already. I've come across a couple of dates; 5th Feb and 12th Feb and I've not popped down to my local Game lately so, yeah.  I've heard mixed views on it, keeping in mind that it is, (or was when I heard those views), in Beta. I've heard there's a few bugs, fair enough. Also the space part of the game is pretty awesome, but the away missions leave room for improvement. From one of the sources, the guy said that although the space part of the game was great, he wasn't sure if that was enough to justify paying the monthly subscription. But that's one man's thoughts on the game. I'd certainly be interested on what other people would think about it. I, myself, am considering dropping WoW for a while to dabble in STO. Hmm, we'll see..

Other than that, not much occuring here. Great stuff, back to leveling!

  1. Yeah, we were pondering the Star Trek MMO so I looked it up online and found a few gameplay videos, and read some reviews, and it didn’t really grab us so I think we’ll give it a miss; if we got it I think it’d be one of those things we’d play for a month then get bored of, which is just a waste of money. So we’ll hang on for something that really grabs us. ^.^

  2. Yeah, I think I mentioned to you before actually, WoW’s starting to get a little stale so I’m looking for other stuff to play around with. STO was one of the options. Other options are Aion, Warhammer Online, Earthrise actually looks pretty good, (I think you told me about that :) ).

  3. You could also try a few single player games. ;)

We played Aion for about a month. It’s not a bad game actually, but kind-of lacked the staying power that WoW had.

  4. Ahh, thinking of single player games, I do want to take a look at a couple of games. Dragon Age Origins, the Mass Effect games.. Mirror’s Edge looks interesting. Oh, and Assassin’s Creed.

With Aion, I’ve heard that there’s a lot more grinding involved compared to WoW and takes an age to level up. But that’s only from a couple of sources.

  5. I think you’d really like Dragon Age – and Mass Effect is pretty much the same, but in space. Huge fun, even if you’re not normally a fan of space games or shooters. I played a demo of Mirror’s Edge but it was pretty tedious :( And Assassin’s Creed II apparently has much more depth than the first – which is probably a good thing; I didn’t really get into the first one. Eye candy can only hold you to a game for so long, hehe.

The Aion grinding thing is bullcrap. We heard so many people complaining about it when we were playing, but it’s absurd. The variety of quests is exactly the same as in WoW – escorts, killing # of mobs, killing mobs until X drops, etc. There are only 50 levels, getting to level 10 took us a couple of hours at a casual pace, and then level 10 – 20 is comparable with WoW levelling. You get more XP from farming the heroic zones and stuff, just like WoW.

  6. I think I might pick up Dragon Age at some point then, when I have me a bit of spare cash. Have a play through that.

Yeah, I think having eye candy in a game is fair enough and certainly amazes you how fantastic developers have managed to make these games, but if they don’t have the content and the playability to back it up, it sort of defeats the object of why they’re releasing a game in the first place. And I suppose that’s why I like Torchlight a fair bit. Ok it’s not cutting edge graphics and the like but it still has you picking the game up again and again just to slaughter some stuff and you’d still be bettering your character.

Aion, I suppose the best way for me to make an ultimate decision is to certainly pick it up and play it. Perhaps maybe a month or two down the line. From what I’ve heard and seen from a few people, including yourself, it seems to be quite fun. Also, Rusty mentioned about it not having the staying power that WoW had. I take it that’s more down to lack of content available?

Another recent thing I’ve heard about STO is that they’ve really gone out of their way to give the Federation have a few choices to bridge designs, uniform, etc whereas the Klingons don’t have all that much available. Not sure if that’s going to change or that’s how they are, deal with it. Again, STO would probably be something I’d pick up a month or two down the line and see how it plays to make an ultimate decision.

  7. Aion is strange. We really enjoyed it while we played it, but after a month of playing, we both just lost the urge to sign in. And it wasn’t just us – almost everyone in our legion stopped playing around the same time, and looking at the forums, people everywhere were suddenly just losing interest. We had also heard from a lot of people that once you hit level 30-ish the ‘grinding’ got much worse because there weren’t enough quests to get you through your levels. We didn’t get high enough level to confirm or deny that, but we were also hearing the same thing from people about much lower levels – people in our legion were apparently running out of quests when they were level 15 or so; but I think that was down to poor quest management because Jaco and I were still fine for quests in our mid 20s. I think people were expecting to be able to level entirely on quests, whereas Jaco and I would do the quests at our level, then kill a few mobs extra to top us up to the next level, then finish the next level of quests, etc. Pretty much like WoW – good management of where your XP is coming from and making sure you’re high enough level to do quests easily.
